What to visit in Malaga?

Malaga is a city with 2800 years of history, marked by the passage of numerous civilizations. Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans and Muslims undoubtedly left their mark on the city.
At ELE Apartments, we want to show you what to see in the historic center of Malaga, and we are sure you will be surprised. Moreover, if you only plan to stay for a weekend in Malaga, you will find it very convenient to visit all the tourist attractions that the city offers, since the historic center of the capital of the Costa del Sol is completely pedestrian and all monuments and museums are less than 5 minutes walk from each other.

Alcazaba of Malaga. The most visited monument.

The Alcazaba of Malaga is the most visited monument in the city. The Alcazaba of Malaga, familiarly called “the little sister of the Alhambra” is a fortress-palace built in the eleventh century, during the splendor of al-Andalus.
In the interior, the number of defensive devices used is striking. For this reason, in its time, it had the reputation of being impregnable. But undoubtedly, what captivates are its gardens and fountains, the scent of jasmine and the Hispano-Muslim decoration present in the palaces, known as the Rooms of Granada.
In addition to the well-preserved fortress, you can enjoy splendid views of the historic center and the port of Malaga.

Roman Theater of Malaga.

The Roman Theater of Malaga was built in the first century A.D. during the time of Emperor Augustus.
Although it lacks a scenic front, the great state of preservation of its grandstand is impressive.
In addition, it is possible to visit the Interpretation Center of the Roman Theater of Malaga, located in Alcazabilla Street next to the monument. Here you can discover a magnificent recreation of what the theater looked like in its time, and admire numerous reproductions of relevant pieces found in its surroundings.

Cathedral of Malaga, "La Manquita".

The Cathedral of Malaga or Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación is known by the people of Malaga as “La Manquita” due to the lack of a tower. It is true that the Cathedral of Malaga is unfinished, however, it is considered a jewel of the Andalusian Renaissance.
Its construction began at the beginning of the 16th century. Renowned architects such as Diego de Siloé and Andrés de Vandelvira intervened to shape this imposing temple.

Castle of Gibralfaro Malaga.

Another must-see in Malaga is the Gibralfaro Castle. For lack of a fortress, in Malaga we have two! The Gibralfaro Castle was built during the period of greatest splendor of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada, and was a key piece during the Reconquest carried out by the Catholic Monarchs.
The place on which the military building sits is called Monte Gibralfaro. Its name means “mount of the lighthouse” because it was the place chosen by the first inhabitants of Malaga, the Phoenicians, to build a lighthouse, due to its strategic position.
We definitely recommend you to walk from the Alcazaba to the Castle, it will only take you about half an hour and you will be able to contemplate the best views of the city of Malaga and the port from its viewpoints.

Museo Picasso

You are in Malaga, birthplace of the great painter Pablo Ruiz Picasso. Therefore, you cannot miss the opportunity to visit the Picasso Museum in Malaga. It is the most visited museum in Andalusia, with more than 6 million visitors to date.
The Picasso Museum Malaga is located in the Palace of the Counts of Buenavista, a splendid building of the sixteenth century, which will also contribute to make the visit worthwhile.
