The White Villages of Malaga

The route of the white villages of Malaga is undoubtedly one of the most famous routes of Andalusian popular architecture. It is also a journey through a land of history that has witnessed numerous episodes and conflicts that have left their mark in the form of castles and other archaeological remains.
The white villages can be divided in two. The white villages of the Serrania de Ronda, located in the western part of Malaga, are mountain villages and the white villages of the Axarquia located in the eastern part of Malaga, these are coastal villages that offer the possibility of alternating them with the beach and water sports.

Ronda

The internationally known Ronda can not miss on your visit to the province of Malaga. This beautiful mountain village will conquer you immediately for its splendid scenery outlined by the Guadalevín river and the impressive New Bridge over the Tagus, which has become an emblem of the city. Its Moorish past, palatial buildings and the atmosphere of its streets make spending a day in Ronda a marvel.
Ronda is also a bullfighting enclave par excellence, as it has the oldest bullring in Spain. Its famous Goyesca is celebrated every year in the first fortnight of September. In addition, the Arab baths, the Mines of the Moorish King or the Palace of Mondragón, which houses the town’s museum, are essential visits.

Benaoján

Located in the Natural Park of the Sierra de Grazalema, it is a small village very appreciated by all lovers of rural tourism and adventure sports. In its surroundings we find interesting places such as the caves of El Gato and La Pileta. In the interior of the latter there are a series of cave paintings that show evidence of an early human presence in the area.

Casares

Casares is a place declared a Historic-Artistic Monument, has important heritage samples as the church of the Incarnation, its Arab castle and the hermitage of San Sebastian. The remains of the hermitage of La Vera or the baths of La Hedionda, whose sulfurous waters were used as a source of health in Roman times. Casares is also the birthplace of the politician and writer Blas Infante, known as the “Father of the Andalusian Homeland. Because of the layout of its houses and its sloping streets, Casares has earned the nickname of “Pueblo Colgante” (Hanging Village).

Marbella

Although Marbella became popular thanks to the promotion of luxury tourism, we can affirm that it is much more than that. Its enclave at the foot of the Sierra Blanca, its wonderful beaches and its great historical and artistic heritage make Marbella an unmissable destination.
In addition to making the most of Puerto Banús, Marbella has managed to preserve its typically Andalusian historic center. Whitewashed houses, flower pots and the scent of orange blossom from the orange trees make having a drink in a square a pleasure. The Church of the Incarnation and the Castle of Marbella are among the main landmarks of its heritage.

Mijas

What to see in and around Mijas takes up a day. Its steep streets are intimately associated with the emblematic vehicles of the place: the donkey-taxis. These allow you to get to know the charms of this typical mountain village the old-fashioned way. Then you can visit the old Virgen de la Peña Chapel, the Church of the Immaculate Conception, the Bullring and the Historical and Ethnological Museum of Mijas.
Its steep Muslim streets form a balcony overlooking the Mediterranean that was declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1969.

Cómpeta

The town of Cómpeta is located in the Natural Park of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama, a privileged location that has earned it the name of the “Cornisa de la Costa del Sol”, as it is 638 meters above sea level.
In addition to its popular architecture and the care that the neighbors dedicate to the preservation of their town, this municipality stands out for its traditional production of sweet wine, known throughout the province.
In its historic center highlights the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, built in the sixteenth century and known as the “Cathedral of the Axarquia” as well as the Hermitage of San Sebastian, the first church of the municipality erected after the expulsion of the Moors.

Frigiliana

One of the best known white villages in Malaga is Frigiliana, since it was included in the Guide of the most beautiful villages in Spain. It is located in the Axarquia region, only 6 km from Nerja and with stunning sea views.

This village of whitewashed houses and cobblestone streets lacks no detail. It is also known for preserving the only sugar cane honey factory in Europe, which has marked its rich gastronomy.

Nerja

Nerja, the blue summer town, with its mild climate, crystal clear beaches and breathtaking scenery, has become a must-see destination.
The old town of Nerja retains its authenticity with its narrow cobbled streets, white houses and balconies full of flowers.
The famous Balcón de Europa, a viewpoint with panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea, is one of the most emblematic places. In addition, Nerja is known for its caves of natural origin, the Nerja Caves, which house impressive rock formations and cave paintings. Nerja is a perfect place to enjoy the sun, the beach and the culture.
